Hi guys.

I'm located in Wellington, New Zealand, and planning to set up a native tank. Shutting down one of my freshwater tanks to make room for this baby! I've just finished my dive course and was totally inspired by what I saw out there in the water.

I've never set up anything like this before, i.e native/coldwater tank, so I'm pretty out of my depth. Looking forward to the process immensely!

Here's my plan:

The tank I have available is 40l/10g, which I'm aware is small, but it is what it is.

Most of my equipment will be recycled from the freshwater tank - light, filter, air pump. Right now I have a HOB running, I'm planning just to add some saltwater media in and keep it going. No skimmer in this set-up. I have an air pump going for extra aeration, so I guess I'll keep that. I'm just going to DIY an ATO, unless I find one for cheap secondhand. Not sure about wavemaker yet - we'll see how we go. No heating/cooling, I'm just planning it to be temperate.

I'd be using aragonite substrate bought from my LFS, and live rock collected from the ocean.

I'm also planning to collect all my coral/macroalgae from the sea. I saw an amazing range, but I'm mostly planning on trying to get a wide variety, and seeing what sticks. Mostly macroalgae.

Livestock:
This kind of depends on what I can get, and especially since I'm modeling this tank off the reef and not something easier, like rock pools (where things can't outrun me so much). My plan is to collect first from Whiteria Park/ocean (for those NZers among us) for things like snails, macroalgae/coral, anemone if I'm lucky, and maybe have a go at a fish, but I doubt I will have much luck. Then I'll move to Pukera Bay/rockpools and maybe go for a fish there, or maybe a shrimp/sea star.

So, the current stocking list stands:

1x snail (I might add another if just one is not enough to control any algae ect)
1x anemone
1x small fish. Not sure what will end up happening. I have my eye on a type of small, perching black goby-like fish I've seen before, but you never know.
MAYBE 1x shrimp (I'm not sure if there will be difficulties with the fish eating the shrimp)

So, that's the current plan. Hope it sounds good! I'm still in the process of preparing the tank, so there won't be an update for a moment.

Thank you!
