We set up a 29g QT tank about a month and a half back. Standard set up with a HOB filter, heater, powerhead, and some pvc. Parameters have looked good.
We decided that we wanted to quarantine fish for 30ish days with an observe first, treat second, strategy. We felt that since we are novices in QT medication we did not want to stress fish unnecessarily or risk losing healthy fish.
Last Sunday we added our first fish, two tank raised clowns, to the QT. We observed the fish at the LFS 3 weeks prior to purchase. Acclimation went smooth and they immediately appeared healthy, swimming freely and actively and eating well. That has continued throughout the first week.
As it progresses, we are seeking some input form those with QT experience. Our questions are:
In total, we observe for maybe an hour or two daily. We have not noticed any signs of ick on fins or gills, heavy breathing, stringy poop, etc. Is there anything else should we be looking for?
Over the course of the first week we have witnessed a fish rub against the pvc once, maybe twice. We think it might have been to test something that looked like they could eat it! But who knows. Is flashing a frequent and obvious act?
We planned to only use copper if we saw signs of ick, and only treat prazipro if we saw stringy poop. Would you advise treating prazi no matter what? Would that pose any risk to fish health?
We have read that a freshwater dip could show signs of flukes. Is that advised if there are no symptoms? Is it safer to just treat with prazi than to risk stress or misapplying a FW dip?
Finally, we are considering a tank transfer prior to moving to the display. Our thinking was observe for 4 weeks, then move to a clean 10 gallon with the same parameters for 3 days, then move to the display. Would this add any value to out lasting the lifecycle of any parasites that were missed during observation?
Thank you in advance for any assistance and feedback. Just trying to be thorough and careful.
