We always buy our fish from the same trusted shop, we never quarantine and have never had an issue - could be good practice on their part but also a big slice of luck perhaps.

We are going to a different shop at the weekend and as we have a little 13.5g tank setup at the moment i wondered if a new fish went in that tank temporarily how long would you keep it in there under observation, not looking to treat it unless required but i guess a freshwater 3 minute dip wouldnt hurt before adding to the observation tank

So how long in observation before adding to the main display tank?

Observation only? I would go 6 weeks at least.

FW dips really aren't terribly useful for eradicating disease. They can help if a fish is heavily infected with certain diseases, and they can help in diagnosing flukes.

I am comfortable going far less than 6 weeks, if there is copper and Prazi involved. There isn't much downside to using meds.

Ok thanks

Im about to call my usual lfs and if they have the fish we're after we shall just put it straight in the display tank anyway, but its good to know for future or mail order fish which ive not done before
