When I got into this hobby, I did extensive reading on sands. I read use only Aragonite because of the filtering capabilities.

I bought a bag of Carrib Sea Ocean Direct, because I saw Aragonite and didn't read the full text. It says Aragonite coated.

Is this good for my tank, or do I need to wait and go switch with Aragonite?

I know it's a basic question, but I really want to do it right the first time! It'll be a mixed reef!

Aragonite coated is fine. I think my current tank is Oolite based and not aragonite based actually (been a long time since I added sand).

Although I don't know about the filtering capabilities. Maybe you meant buffering capabilities? Most CaCO3 based substrates will do the same thing.

I live 2 hours from the Pacific Ocean.. Can I simply drive to the beach and collect a few buckets of sand?
