I am thinking about taking a couple of cups of sand from the surf and placing it in my established tank to diversify bacteria. Does anyone see this as a good thing or not. I

I would not. The beach is like your skimmer. Surface fracturing of the water grabs all the nasties inside of it and pulls it to the top and deposited in the sand at the top of the surf. It has been doing that for the last call it 150 years of industrial revolution. The ocean is a big place yes, but we have not always been kind to it, and the remnants of everything that was dumped into the streams, rivers, estuaries, and oceans surrounding where you collect that sand, are still there.

My .02

@Paul B who does this but not from beaches. From what I understand the beach sand is too fine so water can't penetrate it. He usually collect mud from back bays and lagoons for the bacteria and microfauna
