Octo Classic 152-S keeps overflowing

Having trouble figuring out why my skimmer keeps overflowing and need some help. It will skim wet fine with about 1/4” of skimmate a day, then all of a sudden either overnight or during the day, it will randomly overflow. I will retune it and it does the same thing again and again... 3 times so far this week.

Any ideas on what might be the issue? I set the bubbles to be just below the collection cup base at its widest part. Skimmer is routinely cleaned.

Sump water level is maintained by an ATO and is elevated to have the water line in the recommended octo range.

Was it ever dialed in? My classic 150 is dialed in pretty well, so you should be able to get your skimmer working well too. I would set it to rumble or Idle just above the body/ neck junction let that run for a few days to see if it still overflows. you can adjust up over several days if needed. once its dialed you should have to adjust, just keep the air line and volute clean.

You have a nice skimmer - any chance that something you are dosing, something leaching from the rock, or something getting stirred up in the tank are causing the surge?

I just bought a Regal 150sss for my tank and found that I have to keep the bubble below where I have had to keep them on my Vertex 180i. I keep them roughly 4 inches below the collection cup and then, after a day, if nothing is collected I raise it a little. I have quickly learned not to second guess a reef octopus skimmer as they do work very well. I also had to raise my water level in my sump to 8.5 inches, this actually help out a great deal, it allows me to get good big bubbles and not run the skimmer wide open to do the same thing.

some great advice from others, I would dial it down well below where your currently running it at and just let it go for a few days and see what happens.

Water depth it sits in is very important. I run a 2010 150 nwb octo on my system. It's 8" sitting in the water.

Thanks for all the replies, I’ve been tuning it real time until I get foam skim coming out, so I guess I’m not being patient enough. I’ll try and lower way down and adjust day over day and see where that gets me.

Update: no more skimmer overflowing and the skimmate is much darker! Still producing enough to empty once a week, so all good now.
