octopus envy

can you talk more about how you keep them? I understand they should be solitary, tight-fitting lid, don't need a lot of space, probably do better with a little routine interaction or some stimulation. Do they only eat live food?

It really depends on the species. While I did keep a lid on my tank since it was burned into my brain by other people. Neither of the 2 I kept ever attempted to escape. My "lid" was mesh with a couple of 2x4's holding it down. He could have got out if he wanted.

They need live food IF you can't find them. My first one, I assumed he died. I tore the tank apart after not seeing him for a week or so. It wasn't until I had nearly the last piece of live rock out that he crawled out of the barrel I was putting the live rock in. They are very good at hiding and you want to get them as young as possible since they don't live long. Ideally you keep them in a critter keeper until they get comfortable. Then you move them into the full tank. Fiddler crabs were my live food of choice but once trained they ate all kinds of seafood as well as frozen chunks of pe mysis ect.

OMG... Love, love, love!! I have always wanted one of these guys (and seahorses but obviously not together)!!! I seriously started to research them after an episode of Nature I saw last year (I think that was the show). It was amazing to see there intelligence! They are such incredible creatures! What is the min tank size and is that size pretty much tandard for all species?

Love this thread And like the other -Erwin my dream tanks would be one with an octopus and one with seahorses.

how do you stimulate them several times per week?why is live food hard to find? It just isn't sold near you? With frozen food or not live food, do you put it on a stick or tongs to simulate it being alive like they do with snakes?

the 1st pic is so colorful. Is that because of the species?

You can buy feeder fiddler crabs online. A local college by me has some octopus tanks for research and they buy live grass shrimp for the young ones and fiddler crabs for the older octos.
