I currently have a 120 gallon mixed reef and a 30 gallon DIY refugium/sump. My current protein skimmer is an AquaC EV-120 and I'm considering purchasing the Octopus Extreme 200 but don't know if this would be a worthy upgrade from the AquaC EV-120. I have 13 fish and lots of corals and only get 3-4 ounces of skimmate per day. I was hoping to get twice that amount with the Octopus Extreme 200. If anyone can advise me to stick with what I have or switch to the Extreme and a explanation on why to switch I would greatly appreciate it.

This is how dark my current skimmate is, this was 6 hours worth.

Id say by the pick your posting and If everything is going well and you can maintain the beauty of that tank save the money. We always want to upgrade because we like cool new gadgets but dang it looks like everything is good with that tank. stick with what works.

I'm fighting a cyano outbreak but other than that the coral growth has been great. I am going to bump up my water changes and if that doesn't help I will try the skimmer upgrade.

I will say the octo extreme skimmer does work better and is much easier to tune than the AquaC skimmer. I had an ev 120 that never did work very well for me.

I have lots and lots of tanks. I do not currently have an Octo Extremes running, but I have setup a few of them. (I am a LFS and sell quite a bit of the octopus products). I like the 200 the best myself. I had the Ev120 on what was at the time a 180 gallon system, On that system I replaced the EV-120 with a Euroreef 6-3, and it works much better than the EV. The system that the Euroreef came from (a customers 125 system), was upgraded to the Extreme 200, and it works much better than the 6-3.... So it is a long story.
