i assume negative comments, but i thought i'd through it out there: Is it possible to put a small 5 1/2 inch octopus in a mixed reef with peaceful fish like clowns and gobies? Im worried about it inking and killing everything

I think an octopus would be more likely to eat all the fish or at the very least injure them. However it is interesting to ask how they would interact with corals without any fish. I don't think they would pose a threat to corals but all inverts and fish would most likely be harmed

Even a octopus 5 inches big,?
Yup...what is the diet? ....however let's be real, what is the lifespan even in ocean.....is it worth it? No imo. And I'm trying my best to be positive lol.

Small fish and inverts would be goners. This would mean less biodiversity and a less interesting tank IMO. I think it's better for them to be in a species tank.

the fish might work for a little while until one day he kills them all, for no reason. Inverts are definitely not going to last. My bimac even eats snails which are generally octo safe. Urchins and starfish have a much higher chance of not being bothered. You can definitely keep non-stinging corals with him. I have all different softies, gsp, mushrooms etc. a mixed reef wouldn’t be good considering the amount of waste the octos produce.

My opinion is if 0 public/research aquariums do it.... hobbyist shouldnt even think about it

There are plenty of threads on here about octopus. The consensus I’ve seen usually is that it’s a lot of work for an animal that won’t live much more than a year.

Like above comment ESCAPE ARTISTS.
In my younger years I lived on the beach in SW Fla. After a big storm blew in would take a walk on the beach ck all cans , bottles for octopus. Any finds I'd take back drop in my tank. The longest I kept one was about 3 months or as little as a few days. I even thought I had a sealed lid. But I was wrong. If they can poke their toe through a hole . There gone!! I would come home find a dried out covered in dog and cat hair octopus on the other room or never find them. After # 5 I gave up and Found a black edged Moray eel. That one lasted for about 5 yrs.

So, even If you try this and have a sealed tank lid. One day you will forget to close the feeding hatch he'll make his escape.
