Interesting post, thanks for sharing :)

It's funny that the octopus shot out its own light. When we were remodeling our Giant Pacific Octopus enclosure at the National Aquarium, we moved our GPO to a backup tank She didn't like the lighting in that area (there was too much), so she would shoot water at staff when we tried to feed her. She even blocked her overflow and caused the tank to flood a few times. We put a few trash bags over the flourescent lights by her tank and the behavior settled down. One of the lead aquarists said she was being "naughty" :)

I know my octopus, O. hummelincki, used to get impatient when I was feeding him. If I opened the lid to feed but took too long to get the shrimp in the tank, he would start squirting water at me too.

Very smart creatures!

thanks for sharing.. there is something special about an octopus, can’t quite explain it but mine deeply effected me and my changed the way I viewed all creatures in a box of water.. he was uncannily intelligent and very emotional showing his emotions via a plethora of pulsating patterns and colors. When I would come home from work he would dash to the front of his tank and smash his face against the glass watching my every move I’m sure anticipating being fed but he would hide from everyone else including wife and kids who where around all the time.. It’s was 30 years ago that I had him and I’m still deeply effected by that experience even to this day.

Howdy neighbor!

I used to be a diver at the NAIB. Actually got engaged at the ray tray, after giving the conservation spiel. And then, of course, dove in to feed the rays........ I haven't been to the aquarium in YEARS. Have yet to see what they've done with the ray tray (black tip alley.....)

Are the dolphins gone? Used to clean their pools, too

We snorkel in the Florida Keys and we watched an octopus move (to get away from us) and every time it stopped it would 'blend in' using camouflage. First it was a big purple gorgonian, then a tan vase sponge, then a black ball sponge. It was so cool to watch. We later saw on TV (NPR) an octopus sitting on a black & white checkerboard and it actually did a pretty good job of blending in by making itself into a checkerboard pattern!
