Oculus Pearlberry

Hi Frankie, I'm glad you posted this here. I am wondering the same thing. I never really gave you a history of this chunky frag but here is what I tell you. I received this about two years ago from Brett at Saltwater Speacialty, a local store that just went out of business. He stated he used to order from Oculus Aquatics but they ended up going out of business a few years ago. Brett had it in has display tank. This was the one piece I always wanted from his tank. He said this was a very hardy coral because his tank had some ups and downs and this piece has gone through tank transfers. I was lucky enough to get a small frag from him. I do not know what happened to his mother colony since he shut down. I can tell you that it is very similar to my RR Vinh. I will know soon once it gets larger like the Pearberry below.

It's an amazing piece, glad you posted the history. I know frag swaps can be busy. Thanks again for a great piece. Hopefully someone else has some more of this beauty :)

This is an older piece and not like the newer ones we see around the forums now a days. That is why I say it is very similar if not the same as my RR USA Vinh that I have, which is a smaller frag currently. My Oculus Pearlberry colony is about the size of my open hand, which took me over two years to grow from a frag. Before this Brett has had his colony for at least a couple years. I am just estimating but the Vinh came out maybe two years ago on the website. What I am trying to point out is that when people call their corals "rare" and put an outrageous price tag on them I cringe and totally disagree with this practice. We cannot treat corals like it is a 20 Karat diamond. Most of our corals come from the ocean and can be found in many of the reefs. I know there are newer ones that have coloration that are not like the older pieces but that is very seldom. I know a am stirring the pot but that is just my opinion. Some people have gorgeous tanks but just like to keep it for themselves and not post pics. Also there are old timers with a lot of knowledge that just don't post or care to post anymore. Sometimes people just lose track of the names of the corals and don't know what they have in their tanks.

Not stirring the pot here man, understand completely if they are the same as the RR Vinh then we have an original Oculus Pearlberry that already had a name to begin with. but I heard ya. You have 1 coral with 50 different names to it when it already had an original name. My whole post wasn't to make this out to be a gem or something Rare. I found little to no info with pictures and wanted to see if anyone else had any with no harm done. I was hoping someone had a giant colony of it. :)

I wasn't writing my last post geared you Frankie, I know you have no bad intentions. I too would like to see another colony of this piece. My last post has been on my mind for a while and you just happen to start a thread about a piece I had that was similar to the Vinh. As a result of your thread, it was my chance to voice my opinion to the people that read this.

No worries I know it wasn't geared towards me.. Rant away I feel the same way at times. But I come to realize that I just want to enjoy my corals and watch them grow that's the beauty of this hobby, some folks just lost there way. I got to take a ride up by you one day and check out all the Gold in your tank.. haha :)

Will you have some of this at Madison next weekend? :P

Unfortunately no. It has been sitting in my tank untouched so far. Really only fragged it a couple times.
