I've been browsing through pictures of other members tanks for inspiration and I keep seeing corals I like that aren't identified. Can anyone help me identify the type of coral that looks like a shelf sticking off the rocks (similar to shelf fungus)? There are three in this image - one right under a powerhead, one to the far right. Image from dwebb1031 posted under full tank shot thread.

Thanks!

Those are called Montipora. There are many different types. Most people refer to them as Monti caps.

Just FYI..... They grow relatively fast in good conditions and can shade other corals below, so maybe put it down low. Also they will change growth pattern a lot depending on flow, from flat to almost vertical in really high flow. A cool coral.

Ok. Now I have something to save a space for. I'm too much of a newbie, and my tank is to new, to consider an SPS now.

I keep hearing that patience is important in reef keeping

Monti caps are among the easiest SPS, and can be had for cheap usually. They do grows fast and are pretty fragile so they get fragged often. I say try it, assuming you get ahold of a cheap frag. Check for local reef clubs or even individuals.
