In an interesting turn of events, today I spotted an odd pairing in my mini reef.
I have two shrimp goby, a pink bar (flag tail) and an orange stripe (randalls). At one point a few years ago, they both had their own shrimp and through a sad turn of events, now only the randalls has a shrimpy buddy. It's commonplace to see the randalls standing dutifully at the den opening, but it never seems to actually care to feed the shrimp.
So, generally the pink bar usually perches on nearby rocks instead of the opening to it's den like it's cousin, but lately the pink bar has kept closer to the entrance to it's den. Seems a healthy weight and chases food, so I thought nothing of the new behavior, until today.
While I'm scraping film off the glass I see the pink bar goby frantically grabbing scrapings and spitting it toward something in it's den. So of course my initial thought was the randalls shrimp moved in to get fed since it seems the randalls neglects some of it's duties. NOPE, upon closer inspection there was a big fat blue eyed hermit crab in the den and my pink bar goby has was frantically feeding it.
