and of course replacing that meter would short out something on the AC Unit.

Was the AC left on while switching meters? Sounds like a power surge got you when he plugged the meter back in. And I am in Texas also. On the coast, so no, it is not a dry heat!

not sure if the AC was on at the time, but my wife said it cycled 3 times pretty quickly.
