I just dipped my shipment of coral in Bayer following the instructions on the BRS video as closely as possible and I think they look worse than when I pulled them out of the bag they were shipped in.

You can see in some of the pictures that some of them started excreting long stringy things.

10ml of Bayer in a cup of tank water (same temp as display tank) for 15 minutes (each in their own containers).
Then I did a rinse in R/O water (same temp)with a strainer.
Then another rinse in more R/O water then I moved them to a temporary QT that I just set up with water from my display tank, a heater, and powerhead to keep the water moving around them.
I left them in there for about 2 hours before moving them to the display tank.
This is only my second time dipping coral and I'm pretty sure I didn't do it right last time but at least they didn't look this bad when I was done.
Please tell me what I did wrong (besides moving them to my display tank too soon). [emoji16]

By the way that last coral is a Strawberry Shortcake stick. It looks terrible I'm pretty sure it's dead. [emoji30]

Anyone? Please, I need to know what I did wrong so I don't do it again.

"Then I did a rinse in R/O water (same temp)with a strainer."

you did 2 rinse in r/o water ?

when i get new frags , i do my bayer dip for 5 mins. rinse with main tank water / wait 10 mins and then re-dip....and then rinse again with main tank water.

They don't look completely gone but definitely hurt. They will rebound given stable parameters just leave them be. It's amazing how sps can grow back from just a tiny mm piece! I'm pretty sure the R/O did it if that is that recommended amount of Bayer (never used it). I usually rinse in tank water not R/O. I dipped in R/O a long time ago and lost every frag I did so now I use tank water at least 3 times.
Sorry but only time will tell at this point.

Thank you. My fingers are crossed.

I've done loads of dips in Bayer and never lost anything. I think the worst thing you did was rinse with RO/DI....that's what has caused problems....not the Bayer.

You should rinse them in tank water as others have stated, but a quick rinse in R/O water shouldn't cause any long term issues. I wouldn't worry too much unless you start to see exposed white skeleton. They were just removed from a tank where they were happy, put in a bag, shipped, removed from the bag, dipped in insect killer and put in a new tank. They just need some time to adjust. I would skip the QT unless you plan on leaving it in there for weeks to observe. Putting them in a QT for a couple hours is just adding unnecessary stress.

You rinse with tank water

I think I watched too many videos on how to dip with Bayer and forgot which one said what. I rewatched the brs video and it actually didn't say to rinse in ro water but I am sure I watched one that did. [emoji35] I wish I would have remembered the information from the right video. There are a lot of misleading or false videos on YouTube. [emoji17]

Yep this was your BIG mistake,

Then I did a rinse in R/O water (same temp)with a strainer.
Then another rinse in more R/O water

Let it be your BIGGEST mistake this year.............deal?

It's ok to try to be on your own as some ppl hate it to ask all the time, and some are just super lazy to work the WWW to find the right info, not just one site but many.
If you use the search window in the upper right corner of each page and type in BAYER, you would have gotten plenty of threads about it.
READ, READ, READ and READ.......... this forum has so much info stored on them, even me everyday I use it to find something in order to connect the dots.
Dipping in BAYER is something that you shouldn't forget any more same as QT your fish it's a on gonging event when you have new corals to the system or fish.
It will save your self a lot of headaches and will keep the fun part about this hobby on a high level.

Good to know thank you. I thought that additional time in the QT tank with moving would help rinsing off more of the Bayer. Less chance of inadvertently adding traces of Bayer to my DT.

Definitely a deal! I think it's time to start taking notes on what I read and watch in my research, my memory isn't keeping up with the information overload the way it use to. [emoji5] 2nd lesson learned today. I hope I remember it tomorrow, when I'm browsing through threads. [emoji23]
