Oh no!

I just bought a Miami Hurricane chalice frag and dipped it in iodine for less than a minute. I then put it in the tank and it began to shed mucus and then it turned black, you can see some of the mucus in the picture?!?!?! Is this normal?

Picked it up from a local hobbiest, it was cut a few days ago.

It is one of the most hearty chalices out there. So you got it local or was it shipped?

Edit - sorry didn't see the post above. It looked great before you dipped it?

it should be fine as long as your numbers are decent. put it low in the tank and let it get used to everything. like Craig said, it's one of the heartiest pieces around.

It looked okay, it was a dark color to begin with but it shed some kind of mucus. Is that normal?

mucus is fine. it's the coral protecting itself. low to medium flow is fine.

as long as your numbers are fine and steady, then it should make it. I have had tons of frags, fresh cuts and stressed pieces from shipping look worse then that and they've survived. just don't give it too much light because it can't heal and adjust to your lights at the same time. that might kill it. good luck.

bummer.

I was looking forward to a piece. Hope it comes back for you. Their tissue can be very sensitive so I only use revive and I use it for only 10 mins instead of 15 because I've melted a chalice dipping it for too long.

I moved it to the tank that I save all injured corals, so hopefully it will be okay.
