Why is my SCA 302 skimmer going nuts?! My tank is still new. In week 2 now and as you can see everything is coming along. But my skimmer does this even if it's in 4" of water. I just ran it in clean water for 24hrs and got no overflow or anything nutty. Anyone else know what's going on here?

New tanks often will drive a skimmer nuts. When I put in a new filter sock without washing it completely in vinegar it does the same thing. It will settle down as time goes by. Nothing you can do really for now.

Try this. Let it fill up and then dump that water out. Not back into the aquarium. Let it fill up again and dump that water out. Do that 3 - 5 times and it should settle down. Let me know.

I let it run for a week like this and it never settled, although the first 24hrs in the sump it ran perfect. Now I didn't clean my sand or rocks because I didn't know any better (dry rock and sand from Marco rocks) and its been crazy since, I can't do water changes yet because the tank is in the middle of cycling.

Are you adding / did you add, any type of water conditioners / clarifiers? What salt mix are you using?

i used instant ocean salt, and i can have my skimmer in 4" of water (about 1/4" above the bubble plate) and it still does this, no additives.

What water are you using? When I first started I made the mistake of using treated tap water. The added water conditioner would make my skimmer explode.

I ended up adding a cap of stress coat water treater.... How do I fix this

When i added a cap of conditioner, I just dialed down my skimmer to nothing. If it was still going hay wire, I left it off for a day, then all was good to run as normal for the most part. I skimmed wet for a day normally, meaning I had to empty the cup at least two to there times before it settled down after being off for a day. This is just what worked for me when I used any type of water conditioner. Didn't take me long to stop using tap water :)

When adding conditioner you must turn the skimmer way down, it does not like this at all, and certain foods in the water will do the same thing. I have to turn mine down everytime I feed freeze dried Mysis Shrimp. New skimmers also take time to break in, advisable to clean the new skimmer out using vinegar and water, as this will remove the resin that resides on the new acrylic.
