Dinos are back after about 2 months of happy reefing in my mostly sps dominate tank!

I've added the micro bacteria for about two weeks I've had the uv sterilizer going for about a month. I've tried the three day black out and even went to 4 days. The are back and im sick and tired of it.

My nutrients have stayed stable with phosphate at 0.5
Nitrate between 7 and 10ppm that's my success rate in that.
Salinity 1.26
Magnesium between 1390 and 1445
Alkalinity 8.3 8.5
Calcium is high but going down 480
I have really and I mean absolutely great flow. What do I do ?? With corals that demand alot of light?

If its the wrong type of dino (meaning a dino that UV doesn't touch as it doesn't go into the water column), then arguably the UV makes things worse. Have you gotten the Dino ID'd?

No but it is the kind that if you turn lights off the withdraw

Hmm. What phosphate test do you use? I found that dosing phosphate (and nitrate) while adding a cocktail of bacteria worked well for me (other times and most of the time increasing phosphate was enough by utself). I used waste away, ecobalance, live phyto, and pns probio.

Along with daily syphoning into a 10 um sock, and clipping regular filter floss to one side of a power head, try phyto daily. That worked for me.

My phosphate test is api

I put two nitrate removal mats and a bag of phosgaurd and did a 30-40% water change, and pulled my rocks and took them to the sink and lightly brushed and rinsed in the sink with tap water and vacuumEd the sand bed and dinos were gone in 3 days. My levels tested zero and still had a Dino breakout. With in

Your issue sounds like a silicate problem. And the phosgaurd removes silicates as well. Diatoms eat silicates as their food source and their bodies are made of silicates. So as the die the have a continuous supply of food. That is what I learned through my research.

Are very different from Dinos. One can tell because diatoms are like brown fuzz, and dinos like jelly with air bubbles trapped inside. Diatoms not like jelly. More like fuzz. typical for fish only

You are completely right. I misread the op thanks for the clarification.

That's one problem. That test is absolutely horrible. It's the one test I basically tell people to throw out of the api kit as .25 is the lowest non 0 number and reef tanks seem to do best between 0.1 and 0.03 which is not possible with that test kit.

Ok guys doing a three maybe 4 day black out with uv sterilizer

After 15 years of reefing I learned that, for my setup and IMHO, “piloting” the aquarium for 10+ years was the worst thing I have done. Now I decided to just let it go, stopping all dosing, undosing, adding, whatever. Kept my skimmer skimming, water changes 10% weekly with gravel siphoning, temperature controlled, and plenty of herbivores to deal with the algae that is there… Nitrates 25ppm, phosphates 1.0 steady and corals (softies and LPSs) doing good (whichever dies is ok to me), tangs getting fatter… “Piloting” my tank instead of letting nature runs its course was a big mistake to me… Now I am happy most of the time (except when a coral gives up, but 99% do not…).

Without a proper ID, you are just guessing and wasting time IMOP. I have used DinoX after many months of trying different methods to get rid of Amphidinium (Large-Cell). UV will do nothing to these and is a waste of time. I followed the directions to a T and did 12 doses of DinoX and used just under the recommended dose as overdosing seems to be the biggest culprit of folks having issues with it. After the dinos were gone I did get cyano. I used Dr. Tim's treatment for the cyano and have not had any issues since and it's been 7 months. I still dose Waste Away and Refresh every two weeks. There is also a method for fighting Dinos with Waste Away and Refresh that I will to try if they ever came back.

I can agree with the silicate comment. I'm on well water with huge amounts of it. Whenever I do a big water change something pops up. Freshwater tanks I also have do have it 24/7. Type of fw diatom or cyano I guess. Never cared it doesn't bother them. Something I did do was change di resin combo. Confirmed with testing that did help. Something to look into maybe.
