Ok need some help: what hoang on back filter

I recently added a 10 gallon sump to my 36 gallon mixed reef tank. I am currently running a hob filter which I had since the beginning. I also added some floss in between my baffles and rubber banded a piece on my downtube. I only run filter floss in my hob.

Ok I want to do away with my hob filter

I do not have a skimmer or the funds to buy one at this time. I will get one eventually.

My hob pulls a lot of crap out of the water and I'm afraid if I remove the hob and the floss in the sump my tank will fill up with floating particles, is this true?

My goal is I want to buy a bottle of pods and throw in my sump because I want a mardarin. I would love to go ahead and get one but I know I have to wait

I'm also wanting to add sand and live rock to my sump. Is this a good idea. I know I need the rock but what about the sand. I currently have a big chunk of chaeto in it

How do I add the sand without making a mess?

Should I just remove the hob and all the filter floss and let it be?

If your not running a skimmer, leave the HOB there until you get one. Your going to need something to help you out in the mean time. Adding rock to the sump is ok, it will help out the system. Unless your going DSB I wouldn't throw in the sand, its not needed.

+1 on leaving the HOB for now. Once you get a skimmer, you can remove it totally - but you want something for mechanical filtration. Also, when you remove the HOB filter, if you still want something like the floss, get a filter sock and run your drain pipe into it. Much easier to deal with than rubber bands and floss and they can be washed in the washing machine and rotated out. Very easy to use and keep your sump spotless (if you want it that way).

Ok how do you wash the filter sock?

Main reason for the floss on the downtube for now is the hose is right at the surface of the sump and it stops the splashing and noise.

I wish the hob would fit in my sump but it is too long

Reason I was thinking sand in the sump was for the pods. I have a baffle setup where it has a 1" gap about 2" from the bottom of the sump so the water flows more thru the center chamber. I could only put maybe a maximum of 1 1/2" in it

No in the beach idea. I will never again use bleach for any aquarium maintenance. I regenerated my purigen for the first time and killed several corals.
