I have a clam which is about 5" and has smooth sides unlike my small Maxa clam which is ribbed around the sides. Anyway my bigger clam now has left its little support bowl he came with which attracted - her had out grown it and I was giving his shell a scrub with a tooth brush and he let the bowl and had his foot hanging down along with the tentacles of an Aiptasia. I dealt with the weed using a injection of a fluid to destroy them. I was very worried that he had the weed inside him. Well got the hump for a good week, but slowly came back to his normal (what ever that is) he was putt on a large frag plate level in thee sand and he sat there turning around at different angles. Now he has gone walk about to the very edge of the large circle of plaster that the frag plate is made of. He now is wedged against some rock that has a couple of green mushrooms, but is not touching any live corals. He opens up but is slow closing when anything goes over him. If he is touched in the open area by a fish he snaps shut. I have looked all over the internet for ideas about the way this clam behaves - anyone ??? please I have had him about 4 months now and he is a brown colour with a blue thin mantle line round the edge.

Closing fast is a good sign. Picture might help.

he closes fast when he needs to. if he is touched say on the organ that moves water then he shuts fast other wise he stays open even when fish swim up and peck the shell. He has moved over night still leaning against the rocks but at an acute angle. Seems OK otherwise. but not having a lot of experience with clams they do things that concern me like rocking (nearly falling over) burping which can produce an indentation in the sand off the fragging disk (large). The Maxima is blue and has a big mantle with the small water inlet hole at the edge at the end, but he closes fast and often. has great colours and always giving a nice display, where as the bigger Clam which is not a maxima and has smooth sides is very dull brown colours with a checker blue line round the edge of the mantle.

Any photos or parameters/tank history? It sounds like a normal reactive clam!
not worked out the photographs yet and the iPhone even with polarising filters does not produce any good pictures. All my parameters are with in the defined areas and I do daily add using the Red Sea program and a full tank test every Sunday. I have a MAX250 which is 60 gall I have a Red Sea skimmer in the sump and it is very effective, I would say too much sometimes. I have lots of rock and 10 fish 2 clams & a dreaded pistol shrimp that spends its life wrecking the sand but the area where the clams are have a protection ring in the sand to stop the pistol shrimp getting into the area. Worse buy is a pistol shrimp.

Hard to tell from description. Picture is a must. Consider put him on the sand facing up if you have enough light on your tank. Clams looks a lot better when viewing from the top, so having them lower in front of the tank will be better for viewing.
In healthy clams, mantle should be fully extended and regular. Quick respond to change of light as fish swim over them is a sign of good health. Once they settle down, they adapted and will not response to these shadow as much, but passing you hand over the light should trigger response.
With wide spread use of LED, many reefers seem to use too much blue in their light. I always have success with balance full spectrum light, and never use such high blue ratio in light for my tank.

Thank you I do have a high blue ratio so I will try and reduce it.
