old Aquarium Books from 1800s

man the first book on the list is so funny. its about marine aquariums and they was taking care of corals. it goes into how to make an aquarium from glass and stone and cement or converting vases and such lol. also all tanks are using natural light and have tons of plant life as a first thing before adding corals havent even seenthem mention marine fish yet. they are just using seaweeds and algae and even mentions Bryopsis being a good weed to add to your tank lol omg!!

ok so read a book from 1855 on marine aquariums. back then you would aquire all your inhabitants from mainly going to the beach with mason jars, chisel and hammer and go collect algaes and corals and fish you could find. the aquariums used no electricity at all. no heaters powerheads and obviously no skimmers lol. basic idea was you set the aquarium next to a window so the algaes would get light and produce oxygen. there was no mention of bacteria or cycles as per say what basically was thought to be happening was the first week the plants would oxygenate the water to support the fish. there was no feeding you picked fish that ate algae or basically pods but they didnt call them pods but you can tell this is what the author is talking about.

the author claims to have tanks running for a whole 2 years like this lol at that time i guess that was a long time. also no water changes at all just add fresh river water! his biggest aquarium was 2'x1'x1' and ran with crystal clear waters. basically only mention of any filtration other than algae is if your water gets cloudy or begins to putrify you drain the water and basically pour it in a bucket or something causing high ammounts of oxygen and crashing wave effect like the waves breaking over rocks causing the waste to break down then the water settles down and becomes crystal clear again after a certain time and is now useable and clean. then you just put back in the aquarium and your GTG.

very interesting to read to say the least and GHA and bryopsis are encouraged to let grow because it "oxygenates" the water and keeps it clean but we all know now its just removing all the nutrients is really why the water is so clean. very interesting to say the least and shows the power of algaes and seaweeds as filtering mechanisms if you can run a tank for 2 years+ back in 1855 with no heaters or powerheads or anything we use today.
