It's been a while since I've even been on R2R. Basically shut down my larger tank over 2 years ago and had a 30 running in my office since then with one fish and some mushrooms. Didnt even do a water change in over 1.5 years.

Well I sat here one day a couple weeks ago and felt sorry for that fish and decided to get off my butt and get the tank back to how it should be. When I looked at this Battery backup I noticed it was from 2012 and the upon testing it wasn't holding much of a charge. So $90 later I've updated my battery. Upon inspection I even noticed that old battery was cracked.

I've got the same battery back up but have not looked inside it. I purchased it a year ago. Seems to be holding a charge good. Power was out 13 hours and it functioned fine.

Did you also change the battery charger? Thought I had read somewhere that these Lithium batteries needed a compatible charger.

Mine just stays plugged in to a wall socket but it has an inline adapter. Everytime I do water changes and shut everything off my powerheads keep running. That's how I know the battery is working.

NO, the battery has a built-in BMS protection to prevent overcharge, Over-discharge, Over-current and short circuit, and excessive low self-discharge

Did you do this yourself or send it off?
myself, its very easy to do. drill out the rivets holding the two pieces together, swap battery, use short self tapping metal screws to put the two sides back together. Really you don't need the case. And the factory battery charger is fine

Cool -- now wondering if I can find someone selling one of these cheap with a dead battery so I can just steal the electronics instead of going full DIY.

EricR - I have two of them that you are welcome to (one works fine, the other one probably needs some rehab). I just put in a generator so will be able to do without the battery backups. They have saved me a time or two in the past!
