Old magnesium supplement still good?

Hi All,

I am getting back into reefing after a long break. My last attempt ended with a tank-sitter disaster. Just prior to that disaster I ordered two part + magnesium dosing supplies (dry chemicals) from BRS. I never opened the supplies, but decided to keep them just in case. I just dusted them off and noticed that the container of magnesium chloride had caked up into a brick. The container has been in my basement for the last couple of years, still unopened. It looks like there was condensation inside the container.

Does anyone see an issue with breaking it up and using it? All the other components look fine.

You may want to attempt to email BRS to get an answer from them... I would tell you to toss it. I don't know how far in you are, but I'm 6 or 7 months in and I still haven't needed the magnesium.

Thanks for the reply. I have not even gotten started yet . Just reasearching and gathering equipment at the moment.

Its perfectly fine. It does not ever go bad, although if it gets more moisture in it, it might get hard to break apart (but is still good to use).
