I imagine it’s a long shot .... but has anyone tried grinding a hole in the brace on an old oceanic tank?Hard for me to tell with sunglasses whether it’s tempered or not. I don’t thinks so, but perhaps somebody knows. No manufacturer to ask anymore. It’s a sump, so not the end of the world if the brace shatters.

Please post what you find out. I have a 1992 Oceanic 135 as my DT.

One day, I might want to drill he back for a ghost box overflow.

Thx.

Yes, understood. It’s just that it’s a running sump and not so easy to get a phone/screen in and under the center brace. I tracked down a few older threads on RC and I am going to give it a try. I can continue to use the tank as a sump even without the brace should it self destruct.

@ca1ore what is the risk of drilling (diamond bit under flowing water stream) tempered glass? Are there any risk mitigation tactics?

You can't drill tempered glass, it will shatter into thousands of pieces. Good luck Ca1ore, let us know how it works out!

Well, “scratch“ that idea. (whew! I “crack” myself up - - - not into a lot of sharp pieces, just a lot of small pebble sized ones). [emoji2957]

Yes, exactly - tempered glass will break into a thousand pieces. In this case, since it’s just the brace, and on a sump no less, that wouldn’t mean a total loss. I’d toyed with removing the brace when I first repurposed the tank. I’m going to give it a shot and see.

I have drilled many old Oceanic tanks and never found tempered glass. I doubt they ever used it on their larger tanks. They generally used tbick glass. Even more unlikely the brace would be tempered.

Well, I ground two holes in the brace without incident. Was mostly trying to get the sump a bit more organized and find a better spot for the H380 fuge light. Brace was thick .... 1/2”.
