I've been out of the hobby for nearly 6 years. This RO unit has been hooked up to a water source the entire time, but has not had any water ran out of it in 6 years. As you can see the filter on the right has some gunk seeping out of it..

What do I need to do to get this up and running? Or is it a lost cause? Obviously don't want to buy a new one if I don't have to.

Thanks!

Toss all the filer media, replace the RO filter and run some water through the unit for and 15 minutes to clean up any residue. Add new filters/media and test the TDS and you should be in business

Agreed with above, likely from sitting all the filters are bad. Replace your pre filters, new RO membrane, and new DI resin. I would also give the exterior of the unit a good cleaning. Also something to think about, the auto shut off valve, wouldn't be a bad idea to split it and make sure its all good and cleaned up :)

I wonder what the cost of replacing everything will be? Seems like it might get close to the cost of a new $160 unit.

That would be a good option if you have the funds since it looks as though you have some of the fitting leaking and would have to re-seat them with Teflon tape. Another plus with a newer unit is having a larger di chamber under the RO filter.

I agree with this. Also might want to replace the check valve and flow restrictor just for safe measure. They cost a couple dollars so why not for good measure.

Good point!!

Agree with simply replacing the filters. Not sure were you come up with $160, but using BRS....

75 GPD Membrane......$35
4 stage filter kit............$28

Now I'd also bypass/remove that top polishing filter. That's for a drinking system RO unit and not needed for fish tank water.

You'll also need to add a DI canister and again, BRS has them, with resin, for $40....HERE's an example.
