Got my hands on a old ro unit. Already have a ro/di so didn't get it to hook up. My thought where I could use it as reactors like brs. My question is since I only want to use carbon could I use the 1st housing to hold a prefilter? Like the ones that you put into the ro unit? Also would the carbon filters for ro units work?

If you are using it on a reef system the prefilter or carbon block would plug in a matter or hours since they are small micron size and not coarse like floss or a sponge filter. Even though you may not see them an aquarium has lots of particulates suspended in the water. You can see down to about 40 microns with the unaided human eye and RO filters are typically 10 microns or less, better units are even 1 micron or less so would plug extremely quick.

So you think I could jest put some floss in the 1st canister then some carbon from brs? I really don't want to add GFO and don't want to waste a canister

I wouldn't if it were me. Even floss will get dirty quickly and will then become a nitrate factory. You would have to service it almost daily.

You most likely can disassemble the RO unit and set up as many cartridges as you wish. I would then purchase reactor cartridges to hold the carbon or whatever else you want to run. An MJ1200 with a valve to meter it down will work well as a pump. Here are examples of the reactor cartridges I’m talking about….they fit rignt into a standard RO unit.

Here is a good example of what a dual canister reactor would look like with the high capacity cartridges installed. Note the seperate control valves to fine tune the two chambers individually. Second item down the page:

You are looking at only a single chamber so it would be a snap to plumb.
