I've picked up a small tank which I'm going to convert into a sump for my reef. It holds water without leaking, but has been stored in a (potentially) cold warehouse after being used for some years.

Question is, should I reseal it or not? I can't see anything wrong with the silicone, no bubbles and is not peeling. I wonder if resealing it might actually introduce a new problem rather than helping it. The tank itself does look old and well used though:

(By 'reseal' I mean cutting away the top layers and reapplying, not removing the panes and rebuild from scratch.)

Thanks

It's. Fair amount of work, you need to clean ALL the old silicone off and use the correct aquarium silicone. I would probably do it for peace of mind.

If the silicone looks ragged, I usually do a reseal. It's not too labor intensive, just make sure you take your time and do good prep work. Make sure the seams themselves look solid, though. If it will require a full reseal (removing panels) it's usually not worth the effort on a small tank.

Well I tried, and accidentally slipped the razor blade into the seam and in the process chipped the glass ;Dead I suppose my precision cutting wasn't up to the task ;)

I bought another tank of the same size (for the princely sum of £8) , think I'll just strip down the original and use the panes for making baffles in the second one. Like the first, it holds water fine, and I just don't see any way to effectively remove the seal without cutting into the seam.
