OMG skimmate smell

After using an AquaC Remora hob on my 29 gallon for 4 years I thought skimmate was no big deal for smell. On my new 40 breeder build I’m using a Somatic 60S skimmer and it smelled worse than a dog fart. Dark, thick skimmate. And this is in the middle of using the Red Sea Mature Kit. How much worse is it when I introduce livestock lol. As of today I’m now convinced the Remora is not that good of a skimmer and understand why they resell for so cheap.

Yep, you're pulling out a nice "Texas Tea" dark thiol (sulfur analog) rich stench.

I will say Chihuahua farts are worse, because they like to sit on top of you at all times, used to have one that would sleep on my head....

Darker the funk, the stankier the smell. When I clean mine out in the basement sink, it smells like a sewer backed up down there. Lol

When my Lab farts and walks out of the room you better be right behind him. Skimate smell is close at times.

Imagine this, you wake up from falling asleep on the couch around 2am and notice your tank has cloudy water and you see your RBTA that when fully open during the day is a good 10" round, spewing out Lord knows what into the water column. Your Reef Octopus BH90 going crazy for about 2 hours but doesn't overflow, skim is just really dark. Mix 5 gallons of water for the next day to do an emergency water change.

Wake up at 7am, tank is clear and anemone is back to normal. Changed water that day and drained the skimmer cup. The foul stench that you poured down the drain in the bathroom down the hall is filling the whole house for about an hour after you finally decide to open the sliding door in the other room to air it out!

Yeah some skimmers are better than others!
