Oh man :/. So newbie here. Had a broken digital salt reader. So I was waiting for a new one. And did not test it for a week. Mind you , for the past 7 weeks I have kept it at a steady 0.025. The new tester comes. I test. It says 17 so I panic and add salt. Well that reader was also defective. I ran out and bought a refractometer and it was at 29 almost 30 so I did a quick water change and got it back to stable. But :(….. is everything gna be ok. Was that a huge shock ?

No, you can come down quickly, just dont want to raise it quickly

What is in your tank? Coral, Fish Inverts? I had a similar thing happen a long time ago but in reverse, I didn't test the salt water for a water change and ended up adding RO instead of salt, my SG dropped from .025 to .021. I ended up losing 1 shrimp and 2 acropora but no fish or softies or anything else.

My shrimp comes out and dances for me every-time I look in there. Lol if I put my hand in there he runs up to me , like what are we doin ? I hope he is ok. He’s a special shrimp

He may be good then, i had 2 shrimp at the time, a fire shrimp and a cleaner and the cleaner was perfectly fine but the fire didnt make it. Could have been the fire just molted or something that added to the stress. Its been a long time so i don't remember.

I’m not sure if I hate them or not .
They are supposed to eat aptasia but every one I’ve had wouldn’t touch them .
I currently have 1 cleaner shrimp which I’ve had for over 2 years .

So , I came to see how everything in the tank is doing a few hours after this ordeal and the lights were off. My 2 clients were side by side floating by the filter. So I look it up and they are sleeping. They were sleeping in the sand one night. But apparently a lot of them sleep like this . Thanks everyone. Im leaving it alone for the night. Hopefully everything survives

I imagine everything will be ok. It is a good lesson though. Anytime you see a reading that seems way off what you expect or very unlikely it's always best to double and triple check the number with another source before making any big adjustment. User error or equipment error is often the reason for very unusual results.

Also most digital testers can be calibrated and refractometers can be calibrated. Always a good idea to calibrate before first use and frequently afterwards
