So guys this is my first tank upgrade I am going from a 38 to a 75 and I want to do it all in one day l. I was going to fill it up with 40 gallons of fresh salt water and the other 35 with my tank water. is this a bad idea? Should I keep my sand or no?

Any cautions or tips are welcome

Im sure I'm going to catch a lot of criticism.

Keeping sand depends on how long it's been in there...it might have a lot of detritus build up. When I do my upgrade, I plan to use new substrate and seed with a few cupfuls of the current substrate. I don't think there's anything wrong with preserving your current water if there aren't any issues with it.

If I replace sand should I use more live Sand or get some dead sand I figured live sand will trip another cycle and I don't want try to stop as much as I can from dying

That's how I did my 1 day upgrade from my 29g to my 70g. I used all my old water and rock. I used all new sand. Everything went fine.

that's how I did my recent upgrade;

New Water
New Sand
Old Rock
All is doing great
don't use your old sand,.

I don't think the bagged live sand really does much except cost more. Just make sure to rinse the small particles out of your new sand before setting up to reduce cloudiness. Another way to help reduce cloudiness is to add rinsed sand first, then put plastic or a shallow container on the sand bed and fill that with water to prevent stirring things up. Save some old sand for seeding the new.

I think the advantage to live sand is you don't need to rinse it and dry sand can take quite a long time to rinse it.

My current sand has been in use for about 7 months
