My 90 gallon reef tank upgrade is about 3 months old, originally I went Koralias to keep the cost down, two 1050gph on each end and one 750gph on the back wall.

But its just not doing it for me so I am going to upgrade and I am trying to decide if I should go with one MP40 or two MP10's.

Any thoughts ?

If you have absolutely no plans on upgrading your tank, then I'd go with the MP10w's so that you can run them in antisync mode and get more random flow. However, if there's even a glimmer of hope to upgrade tanks in the future, then I'd go for the MP40w and then you could always add another if you decide to upgrade.

I would go with the two mp-10s over the one mp-40.you have two pumps so more random flow plus IMO the mp-40's are too noisy and prone to shaft failure.the shaft isn't supported at the top and over time they wobble out and get noisy.the mp-10's have full shaft support and can't wobble out and IMO they are better designed because of that.the mp-60's are designed like the mp-10's as well so toe that says alot.

I thought I read the MP40 has been redesigned and they fixed the shaft and noise issues.

This is great info. I am in a build right now with a 60gl Cube (24 x 24) and have the same dilemma. I have (2) MP60's with my 180gl sps tank and love the random flow. I think with (2) MP10's with the Cube I can get the same random flow vs. just (1) MP40. But it is a tough call.

Tagging along.......

I am not sure 2 mp 10 is enough flow for a 90 if its sps, might be fine for a softy tank.. I have one in my all in one 30 gallon and I feel I need more flow sometimes.. They are very nice pumps and two would create more random flow but but I think it might be just shy of enough flow. But you also do not say how much flow you get from your return.

People really need to give more info on their systems to get good advice? What are you keeping? What is the flow from your return pump?

I may consider SPS at some point, and if I do I would probably need the MP40 anyway.

And I am not concerned about not enough flow, its the type of flow. Powerheads and returns just blow a straight shot, there is no wave action or undertow as with a Vortech, thats why I am looking to switch.
