I'm starting a new peninsula build which once I subtract the overflow and the thickness of the acrylic has an internal volume of 28.5Lx22Wx21.5H . Because it's a peninsula I'm very limited in powerhead mounting locations. I've opted for the vortech to eliminate some of the cord clutter. Essentially the only place I can put them without being an eyesore is on one side fairly close to the overflow wall. My question is does it seem reasonable to use one placed about halfway up the tank or should I go with two(one low and one high) for greater flexibility. Tank is for dwarf lionfish and is intended to be a mixed reef with hardy sps at the top, random lps through the mid section and shrooms on the lower portions.

Thanks

I wold suggest one gyre on top and still have the Mp-40 in the middle

I just posted a new thread nearly identical to this one. I have the same "problem". Ive got two vortechs, and at first, I just mounted them to the sides, but as you can see being a peninsula, they are in prime viewing real estate. I'm gonna put them on either side of the back center overflow. More than likely at the same depth. I went with two for flow and variability, but my tank is sps dominate and needs more flow that yours.

That makes sense. My layout is a bit odd. The overflow is a full height coast to coast so I can put a vortech on the back wall as the dry side would be under water within the overflow :) This would likely be an issue with other powerheads as well as I expect the dry side magnets for tunze and gyre's aren't fully waterproof either.

I know the WAV's are good for having both magnets under water, and I think the Tunze's are as well. @rvitko ?

Thanks for that info. I just double checked and you are correct Tunze states both magnets are the same so no difference between the one on the inside/outside. This would allow me to place them on the back wall which would look better I think. Now I just have to research which model is best for my application.

Of course the fact that my tank is built with 3/4 acrylic means upgrading the magnets(for Tunze at least) at 100$ a pop......ouch. Does two 6105 streams with upgraded magnets sound appropriate?

why not 1 mp60 works great on my 1 inch thick acrylic tank. I hate Power chords inside the tank and when I used a gyre years ago the chord going into the unit split and freaked me out..

1 MP60 really doesn't change anything from the 2 mp40s. Both mean I have to put the pump on a viewing panel of the tank. I don't like the look of cords in the tank either, but in this case the Tunze pumps and cords will likely blend with the black overflow panel more than the ecotechs would sticking out on a viewing panel.

A little research later and the gyre also has a waterproof dry side magnet. So an xf250 would work as well. Perhaps best of all and certainly the cheapest.
