Looking for opinions on using one or two maxspect fx 230 gyres on a 55 gal dt. Do I really need one on each end or can one keep flow across the whole 4 ft of tank. What's your opinions?

What type of corals? I have one running at 40% and an MP10 on my 93 cube. Any higher and I have a sandstorm.

I would start with one with the controller and see if you like the flow.

No corals yet. Going to be getting a few softies and lps next month. Taking a trip to Orlando and planning on stopping by worldwide corals.

I like the idea of have two pumps. Let's assume 1 pump at 100% power is the flow needed for your tank.

You can then get two pumps one on the left and one on the right. Start the left at 10% and the right at 90%. Add 10% to left and subtract 10% from the right every hour.

That should give you a randomized flow that moves around your tank through the day

I'd recommend using 2 so you can have some random flow colliding in the tank. You can run them at less power too.

I originally had 2 but took one out because I lost a few fish and was thinking maybe the flow was too much. I was trying anything.. I'm probably going to put in the second one again and just dial them down to 30 or 40% each and see what happens.

@fishybizzness I am thinking of getting one for my 55 gal. Let me know how you like it?

@HairyGary have you tried running it higher than 40%? I want to get a good flow in the tank.
I've had it for awhile and love it. Just getting ready to put back in the second one and was wondering about other people's experience with running either 1 or 2 in a small tank like a 55. I'm always happy for all the positive responses I get when asking for help or advice! One thing about this forum is that I never feel like I'm asking a dumb question..

I heard that the gyre is better than EcoTech. I was going to get a MP40 but was told that the gyre is much better because of how it blows the water.

Yes. I plan to up the flow soon once my sand gets more established.

The reason why I asked about corals is that heavy flow is not needed on softies and LPS. But always nice to have the options if SPS is your plan. I had the MP10 from nano I had. I may add a second 230 soon.

Depends on size. The 250 has a 4 ft spread, 230 a little less. My tank is 6 ft across, so one 250 each end.

Depends on size, my 250’s reach ~4 ft across. For 6 ft I put one on each end.

On my reefer 250 i run 2 gyre230s but only max out at 30% ,nice flow. But any higher my sand starts getting blown around

I run two in a custom 65g. They are running at ~25% and do a great job. I've had MP10's, 40's and 60's and really prefer the gyre's.

I set one at 30% and one at 50% and it seems to be working fine. My gobies have started hanging out in the space between the magnets and the glass and grabbing any food that gets whipped by! I'll try to get a pic when I get home later.
