One piece rim replaced by two piece

Hi.

I purchased a used fish tank that is 90 gallons and 48 x 18. The rim of that tank was broken in two places along the outer edge making it two pieces a right and left. It was recommended to me to replace the rim due to this so I ordered a new one and it came in two pieces. The reason why I was replacing the old one was it was in two pieces. The center brace was fine. Is it OK to replace the rim on a tank that was manufactured with one piece with a replacement rim that is two pieces. I am getting conflicting answers and want to make SURE that I don’t end up with a 90 gallon mess in my house.

#WelcometoR2R!!! I have replaced the top rim (sometimes called frames) on a few tanks over the years. While I have done it successfully, I'm not sure that I would recommend it to others from a risk management perspective. Do you have a picture or some info on the two-part replacement piece? That may help us provide more specific feedback. Good luck with whatever you decide!

A break/split in the middle wouldn't mechanically compromise the support. What's doing the legwork is the section that goes from the front to the back of the tank. The portion that rests on the panels is spreading out that load and adding some degree of rigidity with the "L" shape, plus the silicone on the brace, which acts to keeps keep the brace sections from pulling apart. I'm not surprised they'd supply you with a 2-piece brace for that and shipping reasons.

I ran a pet store and when I ordered replacements for customers, they came in one piece and all you had to do was spot dab silicone and press new one onto tank.
These trims are just that- Trim and do not offer structural support in whole however on a bow tank , they do help support the bowong effect mainly from the cross brace.
