hi wanting to buy a one spot foxface when I upgrade tank I'm doing research now and wondered if you guys could help me out if you know about them, things like their personality, size they acc get to, and other things that are important?
thanks

My fox face is my favorite fish. Super cool personality.

some fox faces may nip corals. I keep mostly sps and a few lps. I haven’t seen any nipping but I’ve heard some people have seen their fox face nip corals.

their spikes are venomous, so don’t handle the fish. But other then that I have personally had no issues with the fox face

this is foxy. Shes at least 8”. She’s had a rough life. I picked her up with a full grown yellow tang that a guy was keeping in his over flow. When I got her she was covered in flukes. Both side fins were pretty much gone and what was left was curled up. She had fin rot, and many wounds, and bacterial infection. She was really beat up, had ick and beat velvet. This photos was a few years ago but was taken when she came out of 6 months+ in qt being treated, and healed. She has since grown more of her side fins as well. She will eat from my hand, and is a model citizen towards the rest of the gang.

We picked up a really small one (maybe 1.25") about a month back that we've called "Roger" (as in Roger Rabbitfish). He was initially shy but has since taken up with all his other fishy residents. He's very playful and fun to watch.

At night he sleeps in a corky gorgonian, which is pretty hilarious. By "in", I mean he actually rests in the branches.

He's never touched any of the corals but we do keep him well-fed (SeaVeggies Green seems to be a favorite).

that's absolutely an amazing story, and that you were able to save her is more than great, she's a stunning fish and sounds like she has one of the best owners she could ask for! thank you for the info Ive watched a lot of videos but I want to know what people who have had them think not just care guides so thanks a lot. hope you and her stay well

They can be shy, or outgoing, or if they're like mine, a bit of both. Mine will come to the glass when I'm feeding, but then sometimes gets spooked 5 seconds later when I move my hand and darts behind a rock, full camo, lol!
He also sometimes seem to scare himself because he'll be swimming along and then goes ballistic, splashing a bunch of water out of the tank before he dives into a hiding place.
He's still one of my favorite fish :)

I agree with Erin, mine is a bit shy, but sometimes really bold, out flashing his spines. They are really cool and seem to get along with my tang and other fish. I've never had aggression issues with him or any coral nipping. He's been a model prisoner. They seem to like to be "part of the crowd", so if the other fish are active, he will come out and hang out. So he's not 'bold', but I've seen VERY bold foxfaces. I can't see any reason not to get a foxface. It's something I'll put in every tank I have going forward.

(I have lots of SPS, a clam, etc....no issues)

Thank you for your kind words. If you want to see the tank she’s in now, I have a YouTube short that may give you an idea of the fellow tank mates and corals: taken a few months ago:

They are less prone to parasites because of the thick slime coat they have. They can also shed this slime coat.
When introduced they have a camo they will utilize. They also utilize when stressed or sleeping.
Foxface have a wide and diverse pallet. They will eat just about every type of algea. Including bubble and turf.

They tend to be very skittish but will settle in and have an outgoing personality. Mine begs for food and eats from my hand. It is very cautions with my hand and its spines.

It's a great fish and will house it any of my tanks if sizes allows it.

One other thing -- and maybe this just applies to mine -- be prepared for it to take a giant dump just as you walk up to the tank! Lol!

It's called crop dusting. The corals dig it. My Hippo tang is the queen of crop dusting! I'm pretty sure when I walk up to the tank, she says, "Watch this!" and lets loose.

do you have any LPS or Softies because that's probably going to be the main ones I do

lovely video if you don't mind me asking what size tank is that?

Unfortunately, it usually comes down to the specific fish you end up with. In general, if you keep them well fed, they won't feel the need to look for a snack.
Any fish CAN decide to eat coral, and rabbitfish are known to do so on occasion.
But the general consensus in the reefing community seems to be that they are reef safe, so most likely, unless you purchase a specimen that's already known to take an interest in coral, it will be fine.

If they do eat coral, it's usually soft coral.
ok thanks ill keep an eye if I have lots of softies I think I'm going to have some zoas and a bubble yuma but that's prob it and then LPS, like hammers, torches, bubble coral

I just sold mine. It was a placid fish. I thought of it as the tank police. If there was any aggression it would get between and raise his dosal.
Great fish just out grew my 30 gal.
If I get a bigger tank would definitely get another.

Mine I found like clove polyps.
