Hi,

currently at day 4 of ich treatment.

90l QT tank running with a canister filter and treating a blue tang. Tang has stopped eating and hiding in corner of tank.

My LFS gave me a bottle of what he said he uses called "oodonex" active constitutes - each ml contains
5.4mg cooper sulphate
.24mg of aminacrine hydrochloride

Dosing instructions are vague

Use at rate of 50ml per 50l each day for 4 days . maintain copper levels of .25 ppm. Ensure ph remains at or above 7.8

I have a red sea copper test kit. Problem is the only readings on the colour chart jump from 0.15 (light orange colour) to 0.3 (deepish pink colour). So there is no exact reading i can get for .25.

The first dose gave me a reading over .15 after and the second it became a light pink ( looks halfway between the orange and pink). My Lfs recommend i stop dosing and keep it there. So i have only done 2 doses. Is it safe enough to assume the dose is about .25 or should i get a test kit that can give me a more exact reading?

Also should i put the dose up slightly to make sure the ich is treated or will it be too risky for the tang?

Any thought appreciated

Copper sulfate pentahydrate should be used at a concentration of .20ppm

It's a very difficult copper to use because the therapuetic window is the .15-.20ppm. Toxicity is very close to the therapuetic window as well. I would do a water change to try to reduce the level slightly.

A Hanna checker would be a better suited test kit when using this type of copper. If the fish was eating well and stopped my guess is you have exceeded .20ppm.

Thanks yea should have def got a hanna. He stopped eating soon as i put him in the tank, ill do a little w/c. Why does it say .25 on the bottle then?

Also heard its not common for fish to stop eating regardless

I am not familiar with the product. I can only speak of copper sulfate pentahydrate in general.

Fish will stop eating in any copper product if the concentration is too high.

Some fish are more sensitive than others and could possibly stop eating in copper even at the proper concentration.

I prefer to use chelated copper, I use copper power.
