hello my name is jarred. this is my first post on a forum so my etiquette might be off. i have a 32 gallon bio cube for the past 6 months ive kept 6 different corals thriving with 2 emerald and a strawberry crab. cleaner shrimp, sifting star fish turbo snails, snails that are burried in the sand that i forgot the name. and a few fish, the fish have been harder to keep. ive made the basic mistakes like over feeding and not testing the water i was buying. i want a larger volume of water to work with.. i am planning a 150 gallon marine land tank mostly for reef and critters with fish being the last decision on tank. i would like to know everyones opinion on wether to buy a sump or build my own. everyone says go as big as you can, i can either build my own out of a tank up to 120 gallons or buy one. ive looked at eco systems, and trigger so far but there is just so much info out there its overwhelming.

Well I thought the same as you. I ended up buying a trigger 39 I like it but it would not be bad to go bigger but this one is easy to take care of easy to change the sock easy to get into the refuge too and mess with the skimmer

It is way to simple to make one out of the largest tank you can fit in the available space you'll have that I woukld never even consider buying a premade sump. There are way too many other things to spend $$$ on. Petco has an almost continual 1$/g sale or you can pick up a used tank on craigslist for a very good price. Add a few baffles (1/4" glass from a local glass shop) to make a couple sections and you will be set.

I sort of agree with you but to me my time is way more expensive than a sump

if you got the cash buy one if you are handy and want to spend money on somthin else make one ive made everything for my tank from pvc over flow sump protien skimmer and algea scrubber i even have a old power head that was the pump to a filter i just modified it and cut extra peices work for me so i could spend my money on the good stuff fish anemones corals lights i have to budget stuff so diy was the way to go for me

I wanted the largest volume of water. I was thinking of drilling the side of 120 gallon tank and doing 2 inline pumps. I didn't want my pumps inside the tank. I am a plumber so I want to use the skills I have to my advantage. I want to try to put some type of radiant heat system to heat the water instead of traditional heaters that are prone to failure. I've been thinking for about a month. I am going to get some ideas at a reef show at the end of the month then strart building
