What do you guys use for decision making in picking out a specific polyp to add to your collection?

Do you guys go for-

particular color?
Specific pattern?
Name that is catchy or used to ID it?
Size?
Growth rate?
Known history of survivability?
Cause it's the newest polyp in circulation?
Newest hyped piece?
etc
etc?

I go for the nicer looking, higher priced stuff so I can trade easier once they start growing out. Hornets, rastas, nightmares, etc... If I show up to trade with a bunch of grey/blue zoos nobody heard of, most likely I'm not getting anything in return. Same goes for the chalices.

I just pick up zoas/palys when I see some I like. I think it is good to get a variety of different colors and sizes simply as that seems more pleasing to the eye. I've never been one to grab LE simply because they are LE. I've seen peoples' tanks that have hundreds of dollars of LE but they are so empty looking due to the slow growth :( Now a variety of regular and LE would be cool though... or a LE tank that has grown out for about four or five years.

Agreed ... I just buy what looks nice ... occasionally I will go for a rare LE polyp ... but it usually just sits on the frag rack ... lol ... growing nice and SLOWLY!

I think some of the names are cool too ... ESPECIALLY this one from Mobile Aquatics. :)

color - period!
if they don't pop when the actinics are on and still look good under white lights, i don't want them

give it any fancy name you want and an ugly zoa is still an ugly zoa even if they are only 75$ a polyp for a limited time

although many of my zoas are named, that is not why i bought any of them

color......

size, I'm trying to get away from the smaller polyps ( the older I get )

When purchasing polyps, I use the same philosophy as I do when purchasing wine: "Drink what you like, and like what you drink." I dont care if it's a $3 bottle of wine or a $300 bottle of wine, as long as it tast good, I'm happy!

Cheers!!

I just buy whatever I like. Price or rarity isn't considered much (except when I bought the Toucan), if I think it will look good in my tank and looks healthy I'll take it.

I usually go by color. Second is money. I don't buy the really expensive ones like hornets, captain america's, etc. Just not in the budget. I like em to really stand out in the tank. So far Magicians seem to be the favorite of people who know nothing about aquariums but have seen my aquarium. They really pop!

For me personally it's the unique polyp pattern, design, color combo, how the polyp would pop in my tank and it's look against the other polyps in my collection.

size is next, I hate tiny, microscoping polyps. I like Palys and larger zoanthids
