I can't decide whether to get XR30W pro G3 or non-pro G4. Any opinions appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

Well that is a bit hard. Both will do well on top of your aquarium. If I were in your shoes I would future-proof myself and get the G4s. They have stated you can not upgrade the G3s to G4s. Plus you will get the HEI lenses which has me even thinking about upgrading.

I'd go G3 Pro myself. They're on sale for $599 right now if you want to purchase a new one. Someone had some new ones for sale on the forum for $550??

Tank would be about 72x24x24 and likely mostly sps and fish.

Yeah some good G3 deals around.

That's my dilemma. Save $300 or bite bullet and get newer tech but not pro version(too much $$)

I would get the largest number of the lowest-end ones you can find a deal on.

G3's, G3 Pro's, whatever. Consider AI's too if you like this type of fixture. 26HD's would fit well along the same lines....three or four (or more) of them.

You need three G3's at the very least, but getting coverage with that number usually leaves you blasting a lot of light over the edges of your tank. (A waste.)

Two looks something like this (when you keep the light in the tank), and isn't uncommon. You can see there's a fair amount of unlit space at the top of the tank, and overlap between the lights is minimal. More would be better for light conditions in the tank:

Three would be like this:

(The light sticking out the sides would be reflected internally, creating more over-lap zones...too hard to do that on a quick diagram.)

Well savings would be about $350 off 3 from a non-store seller for 3 G3 pro.
