Thinking about getting one. Have read both positive and negative reviews. Just trying to see if there are any out there who can offer a honest opinion before I plunk down money on this gadget.

Just keep in mind that folks are more likely to post about a negative experience than a positive one. Privately happy, publicly unhappy LOL. Also, every mechanical device will have some level of failures. Caveat-itis, aside, I’ve been very satisfied with mine. It’s been running now for almost two years without any issues. I think if you follow the guidance, you’ll be pleased. I’ve also ventured into auto dosing territory and found the trident approach to be quite sensible. None of this stuff means you shouldn’t be paying attention to your tank, but it relieves many of the rote tasks of old.

Overall, it works well does what it designed to do - alert you on trends. That said, it doesn’t seem particularly accurate when referenced vs other test kits. It also has a substantial amount of drift towards the end of the reagent life.

On going cost isn’t awful and reagent availability seems to be much better.

TLDR; it’s nice for piece of mind and auto dosing but manual testing is still a good practice every now and then

Overall it’s great. I’ve had a few small issues, one recently that was resolved by cleaning the cuvette. I love not having to test alkalinity frequently. I don’t care much about the calcium or magnesium, but the alk is great. I have Trident controlled dosing setup and it keeps my alk very stable.

I actually just made a DIY alkalinity standard that RHF posted about. It mixes at 7.0 dkh. Here is what my Trident tested that standard at. That’s pretty impressive.

+1 on the drift. I love my trident, and I use it for dosing, but you have to watch it when the Ca/Mg reagent bottles get under 25-30%.
