My tanks gets a cloudy haze when I run mesh socks. When I run felt socks it is crystal clear. They are both the same microns. I really like the mesh because they clean so easily. The socks are the Red Sea reefers.

Even though they have the same micron size, felt fiber material catches a lot more debris. They polish the water. Mesh allows more gunk to pass through, that's why they are easier to clean .

I understand the tank may look nicer with less particulate matter in the water, but you may be stripping out potential foods. I never chose to use such filters.
Several folks cut small holes in the socks to get an in between.
Another note, I pretty much never run socks and would never describe my water as cloudy, foggy or hazy.
This includes my sumpless tank.
