I'm thinking about getting some leds for my tank and for some reason i was always a fan of AI over all the other brands. I mainly like how they look and that they come with a remote. I've read that they are coming out with a full spectrum unit called "Hydra". Anyone thinking of getting this unit?

My main concern though is that i read on forums that AI doesn't specify led bins and they use the worst bin numbers especially for the blues. And that some of their leds are basically equivalent to cheap Chinese bridgelux leds. Also, I've read that the hydra uses worse leds than the previous model.

If i decide to go for this unit, i want to make sure I'm getting my money's worth especially for spending over a grand for lights.

The sols used Cree. I'm not sure on the hydra. It is cheaper than the Vega so there might be something to those claims.

The main problem AI has had in the past is that they used Cool White instead of Warm White. (In the Sols at least) Which completely removes half of the spectrum that corals need. The vega has fixed this problem with adding other colors to make a full spectrum. I am not sure of the difference between the Vega and the Hydra though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't this "full-spectrum" ??

It might be. Some of the other ai units didn't have violet/uv led like the hydra has. I think they fixed it with the vega by adding the custom pucks.

Email AI about it Justin is pretty helpful.

Idk I thought the whites on the sol helped with the spectrum as they are a yellow, I like my sol I have to run it super low on my nano sps tank but so far I have no problems really besides pinks holding color well and I've noticed the harder "reef crest" sps (milles, tables, etc.) don't tend to hold their color as well as say, torts, enchinatas, etc i do have some nice colored blue and green milles, and my red planet is holding color great its actually got more color. just my pinks don't look the same as under a MH or T5 fixture.

I plan to add a Fiji purple and super blue actually for more color and just that "pop" I think LEDs are still lacking as far as sps go. I think that they are great for all the other corals tho.

Hydra looks pretty sweet IMO it blends a lot better then the vega. There's an article on reefbuilders if you wanna get more info.

That chart is misleading. Read Sanjay Joshi's write up of the Sol. He puts his own spectrum graph of the true output.

I have used the Sol (Blue) personally and hated it. I know several other reefers (seen their tanks in person) who switched back to T5s, Halides, or other LEDs from the Sol Blue because they, like me, could not get pink, red, or yellow colors to show up in SPS.

IDK why red LPS hold their color under the Sol Blues. My Z/Ps and LPS loved the Sol Blue. I had terrible results with SPS though.

I switched to T5s and instantly I could see my reds again.

LEDs can color up and grow SPS like crazy. You just have to know how to use them and have to have the right spectrum.

Do you have the Sol Blue or White? I know the blue has all cool whites. I think the White has some warm whites added in (a bit more spectrum, but not comparable to a Vega, Radion, Maxspect, Orphek, etc.)

I think that's a good idea adding in some T5s. It's basically a T5/LED hybrid then. I could not do this as I have a rimless and at the time I could not build a hanging canopy to retrofit in some T5s.

I had the Orpheks before and actually like the sol more, I have the super blue. I'm dosing zeo ontop and my reds are coming back, idk. I really just think its how things get put out. Additional t5s will color it up quick just because they reflect a broader azoox.

I'm sorry to hear that you hated the SOL I personally like it. Like said my pinks aren't as good ad that whole red/pink hasn't looked the best but the longer I've given it the better its turned out. I also stopped feeding although I add supplements I just at the moment haven't used any coral food like "coral viralizer" or Elos Aminos.
Since my colors have as well gotten a lot more deeper instead of that "led unhealthy look" the super blue has the whites which are as well yellow. The vega is full spectrum but talking to AI (yes it is their product so very much so they can be talking it up) they said the SOL is just as full spectrum, and a lot better for sps and a deeper tank since how strong it is due to the optics. They also never advertise the vega as "full spectrum" they say its the "most controllable" as you can control more colors. I read sanjays right up there's two ad in one he contradicts himself and corrects himself in the second. Mike paletta didn't like the Vegas either but then if you look at a couple sps tanks (300 from brazil, Urbain Appletans, Shaun M's solana) they all run sps under the sol with exceptional results not to mention everyone from h2ocran switched to the sol, so David Saxby, and so on.

Another thing on that is Eshans tank at triton runs the Lani LEDs which is their brand that mimicked t5s as best as possible. They have no reds or greens on the fixture but put white, a lighter blue, and UV and his tank is amazing. LEDs have their flaws which is bringing out the pinks/ and reds hence why I'm adding a t5s.

Shelby's reef is another great sps tank that ran only SOL super blues and still does. The oddest part is the SOL is a flip flop, I've heard ppl hate them and ppl love em. I had to turn mine down to 30/50/50 in order to not bleach my sps,

Again, I believe you and i so agree with most of what your saying just not all. I easily believe the sol competes with other bigger LEDs like the radion etc and actually I think the sol is better then the vega. I know a store that runs the vega and personally dislikes them a lot and I've had a few corals color up under SOL from vega switch. The radion pro, GHL Mitras and LANI by triton are probably the best out. LEDs are young they will improve with time.

(My yellows as well come out great if I put them in lower light, they turn green when getting blasted with highlight)

Another reason LPS love LEDs is that te blue is to "technically" mimic depth. LEDs have a higher nm wavelength in blue and in doing so a lot of LPS and what not love it. I know a fellow reefer who has a nice acan collection and practically runs it on only blues and a couple whites. Colors are insane!
Another reason why sps don't like it as much. It's also not the lagoonal sps I've noticed but more of te reef crest sps like milles etc. they just don't do as well under LEDs especially the pinks, all other colors are fine tho. I do have OCD so adding t5s is what I'm doing just for those few corals (and all my corals cause t5s are the ****) look better. I still think LEDs are not the best lighting system for color. And need the most improvements. But I like my electric bill a lot smaller and will deal with it for that reason. :).

hmmmm I run a jbj over 14 bc which is a cw,RB,b led fixture and I am getting intense red on my strawberry shortcake. But I would agree with the sol blue argument, I have one over my 30 shallow and colors look a little faded(corals). I too will go full spectrum on that sol

The main problem AI has had in the past is that they used Cool White instead of Warm White. (In the Sols at least) Which completely removes half of the spectrum that corals need. Well ai went back to cool whites only in the hydra fixture so I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. On one hand people say neutral whites look like crap because they are too yellow but on the other hand, the spectrum is much better because neutrals have red and green in them. Basically eliminating the need for standalone red/green led.

Right now I use 48 cree royal blues, 12 violet/uv with 4 30 watt 20000kmulti chips for the whites and my coral is barely growing. I'm almost positive it's the lights. I'm thinking they are too strong because coraline only grows in the furthest corners of the tank, anywhere else the rocks are all bleached. So I am wondering if I should just detach the multi chip lighting and put in cree xml instead or just try the new ai lighting either the vega or hydra?

Edit....Sorry I didn't notice all AI fixtures used cool whites. I think I got mistaken with the custom pucks having neutral white.
