Hi @Jay Hemdal

wanted to see if you could help me with a second opinion.

Long story short all of my fish have been quarantined and treated by me with copper power and prazipro pro other than 1 fish from a well know reputable source that quarantines and have not added any fish for awhile. On Monday I noticed cloudy eyes and scales on a few fish looking white. I fresh water dipped a chromis and flukes came off of him and he was not swimming straight. The chromis is still alive but not doing great, and the trigger looks worse for ware with the same white blotches and a sore on his top fin and would like your opinion.

I ended up dosing prazipro to the tank due to it’s size and having to quarantine 20 fish not being an option, been 3 days and just did a large water change. Everyone else is out and eating looking great other than the trigger still looks not the best to me. He eats like a pig and is showing no signs of flashing. You will see white spots that look to be on the trigger like ich but that is from particles floating around other than his mouth.

I ended up leaving the UV on due to forgetting when I dosed so I’m assuming I will have to do 2 more rounds of prazipro and will have to wait a few days until another dose.

Thanks

The flukes that came off the chromis, were they Neobenedenia? Those look like fish scales or some people, sesame seeds. Other flukes are a lot smaller and I usually need a microscope to see them in dip water.

What about trying a FW dip on the trigger?

I’ve really never been able to stop Neobenedenia with prazi - the eggs can go for 30 days before hatching, so it takes 4 weekly treatments, and even that often fails. The big issue with prazi is that bacteria grows that eats prazi, this results in people thinking there are prazi resistant flukes, but in reality, multiple prazi treatments just grows so much bacteria that it gets eaten right away.
I use a 35 day hypo treatment for Neobenedenia now.

Generally, distinct white spots are not flukes, doesn’t mean that the trigger doesn’t also have flukes, but that the white spots are something else.

yes, they were sesame seeds. Trigger runs like hell deep into the rocks anytime a net is near the tank, other than that I can hand feed him. We tried for the past week to catch him and had no luck with a fish trap also. It’s the white blotches on the side of the trigger that have me perplexed, and the sore where his top fin meets his body, his eyes may even look a little cloudy. There is no “dusting” on any fish, no ick signs- Just white “blotches” on the scales.

All the fish were pooping normal, eating like normal, breathing like normal. After the 25% water change today they all went back to their normal business and all chowing down. This is not a fish disease that I have ran into yet, only way I could’ve introduced it is from phyto or coral frags.

Honestly if I’m tearing down a tank this size to re quarantine all fish it’s a wrap

Hi,

Sorry about the issue. Awesome looking trigger. I just finished a round of Prazi for 2 newly acquired tangs. I treated them in my display with no issues. I did turn off the UV though, I think that does make a difference. All my coral, sps and all were fine.

I have found a great method for trapping fish if you need, especially if you are hand feeding. I have a screen built for my 180. It is used as a tank divider. I use it to cut my tank down in size until I get the fish trapped into a small section with no room to escape. I used some aluminum frame from HD and reg window screen, but I think everyone should have some plastic mesh. Grab some of this, or bigger sheets like this. Use this as a divider. As you hand feed slip it in behind him to cut the tank down until you trap him into a more manageable section

Thank you! I believe I have some already in the garage. I know I have flukes, I just don’t know if the white blotches on the sides of the body on a few fish is caused from flukes. I will do two more doses and hope for the best since I may have botched the first. My guess is one of my chromis will be a goner and hopefully the rest make it. I’ve had the 8 of them for years.

Trigger seems happy so no idea what I’m dealing with here other than flukes or how it got in the tank

Odd enough the sps look great after the prazipro dose, I’m guessing they may be enjoying the added bacteria from prazi
