I've always ran a tank with carbon. That being said, my alkalinity has always been 7-8. I've heard if higher while dosing carbon, you can burn your sps corals. I'm currently trying to promote faster growth for my corals and was thinking of raising my alkalinity. Would that actually help? My main concern is losing water clarity if I remove carbon. I know plenty of people don't use carbon but just want to here some people opinions on it. I do also have a refugium with some chaeto and live rock.

I believe you are mixing up concepts of Carbon dosing with Granular Activated Carbon in a filter or reactor.
They are two different things.
Carbon dosing it's the use of a carbon source like vodka, vinager or any other source of carbon .
Granulated activated carbon is what you put in a filter or reactor.
Sorry if I did not understand your question but my guess is that you had things mixed up.
While carbon dosing ( vinegar Vodka etc) you might want to keep alkalinity low if you are already in a low nitrate or phosphate level.
But you should read some more about in Randys chemistry forum , or post a message he will probably chime in .
