Starting a Refugium and planning on using thsi product...

Any informed opinions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I run it as a 2" substrate in my fuge on my 75g. One of those things I did back when I started and since it's in there, I just kept up with it. Does it work? A lot of people will debate this topic. It seems it's about a 50/50 split down the middle. Those that are against it, really feel it's a waste of money. Those that use it, really believe in it. As a Miracle Mud user, I'm not 100% convinced, but I still roll with it, just in case.

I can tell you this, when I first put it in, I had some pretty serious polyp extension from my SPS, but that subsided after a few months. Ecosystems states you have to replace
50% every year, and when I replace mine, I get that PE on my SPS for another few months. I'm thinking I'm going to switch to 25% every 3-4 months which will average out to about 60 bucks per six months based on how much I would need to replace to see if there is any difference.

I will tell you that you are going to want to soak it in a bucket or two for a couple of days prior. I just used RODI to soak it in. That way you can pour off the free floating particles every day and fill it back up to soak. If you don't do this, I've found that it turns your tank brown for a day or two. You still get cloudy water after soaking it, but it disappears really quickly this way.

Hope this helps!

I had a 3" sand bed in fuge and couple months after I setup this tank threw 12 lb bucket in on top of sand. Tank went white for couple days and when it cleared....

Oh baby oh baby pe was definitely insane! Great stuff! I've had insane pe and it's never gone away. Never had added more or replaced it's been almost a year. I would have to disagree however with the above rinsing recommendation because it has a lot of trace elements and other goodies you'll be losing IMO if you rinse. If you don't mind a cloudy white tank for a couple days there's no harm.

From what I have read and the research I have done I'd agree with Qube. Most people love it or hate it..

I don't use it. Thought about it, just never did. I've also thought about added sand, but same thing just never did, makes it easier to clean your sump with a bare bottom.

Maybe this time I'll go without rinsing it and see if that changes anything with the amount of time I see results. Worth a try, since i have rinsed it every time since the first time.

So if you added it to a live system it just clouds your water for a few days. I've still been thinking about this.

I used it for some time. I'm not gonna deny that I think there were some benefits, however I dont think these benefits were specific to the miracle mud itself. I think I would have seen the results with any fine particle mud i tried. For these reasons when I set up a new tank I went without it. Just overpriced mud in my opinion. You can do the same thing with other mud types or remote deep sand beds

It clouds it yes, because the mud is so fine. So keep I n mind every time you disturb it you will get a cloudy tank. I have not seen much to prove to me it is worth anything, plus the added hassles of "sand storms" every time I adjust something in my sump, I won't add again, just can't figure how to get it out.

Cheers,

It's garbage. I had it in my refugium, it's such a hassle and it's super expensive. I would never run it in my tank again, even if it was free. No BS

If ur set on having substrate in ur fuge, go with a deep sand bed

Cheers,

I had to tear everything out of my fuge and shop vac it all out. Such a pain

I've used it and can't really tell much of a difference. I run an external fuge and am able to keep the fuge offline until everything settled down before returning flow to my fuge so I've never really had a problem with cloudy water. I'm like most here, I out it in my tank and can't tell a difference but am just too lazy to remove it. Lol

Thanks!

Thanks for all the input guys! I have some in my fuge now and kept it offline to help with the cloudiness after the first few minutes caused a white out in my tank! (it was completely clear in about 6-8 hours) ...
Apparently, I ordered too little for my 92 Gallon set up with 15 Gallon Fuge so I have 10 more pounds on the way. I rinsed the first 10 pounds. I won't rinse this time and see if I get the PE everyone mentioned. Didn't notice much with the rinsed stuff, but it's only been about 36 hours....

Thanks again!
