Hello
I am new to reefs. Just researching as of now but would like to select my size of tank so I can start working on buying the pumps and other things need for a tank. I plan on going slow with it so i can read more about this hobby. So i was wondering what your opinion wold be on tank size. I have three tanks that I am thinking of getting first a 90 G reef ready tank with two overflows for $360 (marineland, tank only) Next 75G Clear blue reef ready one overflow for $330 (tank only) Last a Clear Blue 75 G no overflow for $385 (stand, glass top, light included) What would you pick I'm leaning towards the 90 G. Because of size and its only a little but more. Also i bought a 40G to build a sump would ths be big enough for a 90G. Thanks for your help.

Thanks
Nic

I would go with the 90 and the 40 would make a great sump for it. I think the 90 is great starter tank with someone just getting into the hobby. It is not too big or too small.

First off let me get the easy stuff out of the way….a 40B is an excellent sump/refugium tank for any of those DT’s mentioned.

As far as your choice of tank size, I’m not crazy about standard overflows….they are behemoths that take up too much room. A four foot 90 gallon with two overflows….PLEASE. That’s now a 75 gallon tank with two large ugly pieces of plastic in the back of the tank. Buy a non-reef ready tank and purchase a Glass-Holes overflow. The kit comes with everything…includes the special bit to drill glass. Note that I’m very opinionated about standard overflows….just don’t understand why they have to make them so big.

Your other choices with a glass top or with lights…..I doubt either is really for a reef tank. You didn’t mention, but if it’s going to be reef, a glass top really doesn’t work. Also, I would guess the tank including a light is not the type of light needed for corals.

I would just hate to break the glass and have to try and repair that. I would definatly have to buy dif light or more light for it. All it had was one T5. Also I think the 90G was an acrylic tank. Is their anything special that needs done with acrylic tanks?
