I have both wall reef and just changed my fowlr to islands. I like the island more than the wall. The island leaves more swimming room and the fish are more active and not just hiding behind the wall. Just my experiences
 
I agree with removing the branches. If you want to keep them, I would break them up and have them sticking out of several of the holes in the rock on each island.
 
I would remove the branches from that location and make a pile of them front and center and make it a unique zoa garden
 
I would get rid of that rock but my kid picked it out. It is all one piece of branch Tonga
 
If you happen to remove that branching rock, I have some little guys that would love it! Maybe your son would be up for a trade? I have a 12 year old. I understand they are tough negotiators! Lol
 
Since your kid picked it out make it more of a focal point on side of the right hand island; it’ll flow better than merely acting as bridging feature between the two islands and bring it more to the foreground.
