So I want to do more cyano syphoning this red slime. Been doing with by weekly w/t. Can I run it thru a sock back into the tank with out micro bits getting spread around?
I hear it's done. Looking for OP's . Thanks

I did this when i had Dino's would blow it all up and siphon it down to a filter sock. I dont see why you couldn't do the same with cyano.

I have done that, but it will be a never end task. The only way I took care of the issue was to use chemiclean. I've used with soft corals and never had an issue.

I think it depends what your goals are. Cyanobacteria can range from less than 1 micron up to 40 microns. The typical aquarium filter sock is designed to filter 200 microns. So can cyanobacteria fit through the filter sock? Yes.

Fortunately, cyanobacteria form chains much larger than 200 microns and will be captured by a sock. So will you get them all? Nope. Will you still effectively remove some or most of it? In my opinion, yes.

From what I know cyanobacteria cells are tiny. So if you want to worry about material at that level you will need another approach like diatom/micron filtration or UV filtration. (Or both.)

Cyanobacteria mats are chunky, so a filter sock will do fine with that.

Thanks for all the quick & thoughtful OP's . I'm not willing to deal with this at the cellular level ,just get the mats out.
