So when I first setup my tank I optimized my lighting schedule for viewing the tank. I have a roughly 45 minute commute for work so I typically don't get home until after 6pm, sometimes later. So I setup the tank lighting to turn on around noon and then goes off right around 10pm. That gives me a good 4 hours of viewing time after I get home and it's also when I typically do my feeding.

Up to this point I've had fish that do well with one feeding a day (2 clowns, 1 yellow watchman goby, 1 firefish, and 1 bicolor blenny). However, I'm looking into adding a wrasse to the tank and understand they need multiple feedings a day.

With that in mind, should I consider adjusting my lighting schedule to allow me to feed in the morning before I leave for work and then again at night when I get home? If so, what would be the best way to ease into that adjustment? I presume I might need to lower the intensity of my lighting if I'm going to lengthen the overall photo-period.

Or are there other options? I thought about going the autofeeder route, but I'm not sure how I would set one up with my mesh top to prevent the wrasse from potentially jumping out. (Although I guess pellets would likely fall through the mesh.) I also thought about looking into masstick as I could place some on the glass before work and the fish could feed on it throughout the day.

In general, what are your thoughts on optimizing your lighting schedule for feeding versus viewing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Imo I would probably look into an auto feeder and find a way to mount it so the pellets would fall through the mesh top.

Do you have an apex or any automation? You could set timers to turn off or slow down pumps so you waste less food down the overflow.

+1 to the Autofeeder route. I have one set up right now and it drops through my mesh without any issues. That way you can still enjoy your tank and make sure your fish get fed throughout the day, then give them the good stuff when you get home!

No, unfortunately I don't have an Apex or any other sort of tank controller. I have an inkbird to control my tank's heating/cooling, but that's about it.

I could get one of those feeding rings and place it beneath the autofeeder so the food would stay in that area instead of going down the overflow. However, when I'm feeding pellets I typically drop them beneath the water surface with my hand so my fish are not used to feeding from the surface. I think they could figure that out though.

Thanks for the feedback guys! The autofeeder sounds like the easiest route to go and I've been considering doing this regardless so I can feed smaller amounts multiple times a day, rather than just one large feeding at night.

Do you have any recommendations on brands? I was considering the Eheim as I think you can get the feeder ring that works with the auto-feeder unit.

If you need extra timers, I have a few laying around you can have.
