LFS has ORA Bred fish. Holding tanks are on a different system than the rest of the store.

These do have a premium $$ as they are supposedly pest/ich free, etc. QUESTION --- would you still run it thru a full quarantine? Or maybe a QT Lite and just watch the fish for a couple of weeks?

I watch my LFS put their hands in one tank, then another with barely a wash or a rinse. I wouldn't trust someone, somewhere didn't do the same

Personally ,its always best to QT. Even though LFS or LA/Divers den has ORA captive bred fish the cross contamination or aerosol contamination is almost a guarantee.

Agreed. They might be healthier and even pest free, but if they spent any time in the LFS's systems, whether different or not, I would QT them to be safe. Ich has been shown to survive airborne aerosol and contaminate another tank up to 10 feet away (Rare but plausible). If it we me, I would QT, prophylactic copper treatment for 2 weeks, observe for 2 weeks and transfer to the DT depending on how healthy they are. I usually do 6 weeks tho.

If you plop into you system, its probably a safer risk than others, but still a risk none the less. With a 120g, I wouldn't want to take that chance.

EDIT: What store? Reef Systems? I started reefing in Columbus and moved back for a few years before coming back to DC, so I am familiar with the local stores there. If it was reef systems, Todd is usually pretty good about that system, but there are unquarantined tanks across the aisle. and his idea of QT is observation and not treatment so I would still QT. Any of the other stores, I would QT 6 weeks for sure. If it was Aquarium Adventure, might as well skip it! That place is hopeless.

Not to mention LFS staff dipping hands in and out of tanks, specimen containers, scrapers, gravel vacs, floating leaking bags from incoming shipments, etc…. The list goes on.

And there is another reason to quarantine besides disease. The fish we take home are usually stressed and disoriented. I keep mine in quarantine to be sure that they are disease free. But I also use the quarantine to get the fish fattened up and unstressed. I want them to learn my feeding routine and get used to it. My tank has a level of chaos in it and any food added is quickly gobble up. A stressed and disoriented fish would have trouble getting food if they go right into the display. This way they know to come out and get the food whilst the getting is good.

@Nburg --- its Reef Systems and I agree that Todd is pretty good about it. OK ---- 1 month at least in the QT tank.

I agree that Aquarium Adventure ---- is just a miserable mess. I got something from there once. ONCE.

Todd is a good dude, but he can be pretty opinionated, so take everything he says with a grain of salt. Never ask him about using sand, lol.

I always TTM my fish and prazi pro them. 14 days is worth piece of mind, no matter where they come from.
